James Cleverly is one of the few Cabinet Ministers in history to have served as both Foreign Secretary and Home Secretary.<\/p>\n
His career spans the military, business, and local and national politics, including a tenure in government during some of the most turbulent times in recent history. He continues to serve on the frontline of British politics as Shadow Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government<\/strong>, and brings insights into the domestic and international political scenes, as well as into strategy and leadership.<\/p>\n Forced by injury to leave military training at Sandhurst, James went on to serve in the Territorial Army, where he rose to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. He then entered electoral politics, joining the London Assembly, where he served in various departments including chairing the London Fire Authority, overseeing strategy, budgets, and performance.<\/p>\n In national government, as Home Secretary, James was responsible for policing, counter-terrorism, immigration policy, and the National Crime Agency. His term as Foreign Secretary saw him lead UK diplomacy through pivotal events, including Russia\u2019s invasion of Ukraine, the Sudanese civil war, the Israel-Hamas conflict, and the UK\u2019s evolving relationship with the EU.<\/p>\n He also held ministerial roles focused on Europe, the Middle East, and Africa, as well as Secretary of State for Education. Beyond government, James played a key role in political strategy as Co-Chairman of the Conservative Party during their successful 2019 General Election campaign.
