Jennie Platt Sales and Lettings is an agency with six branches in Manchester, and Platt is listed as managing director. Bibey was a director of the company for less than a year in 2020-21, according to Companies House.

As a player with St Helens, Wigan Warriors, Wakefield Trinity and Leigh Centurions, Bibey enjoyed a career lasting more than 10 years and 215 appearances, before an injury brought it to an end in 2012.

He won the Challenge Cup with Wigan in 2002 and with St Helens two years later.

Deeply saddened

Leigh Centurions said that the team were “desperately saddened” to learn of Bibey’s death: “Everyone at the club sends sincere condolences to his family and friends at this time.”

Wakefield Trinity said: “Trinity are saddened to hear of the passing of former prop-forward Ricky Bibey, aged 40. We send our condolences to Ricky’s family and friends at this tough time.”

A Foreign Office spokesperson said: “We are in touch with the Italian police following the death of a British man in Florence.”

Platt featured in a BBC documentary Manctopia (main picture), and is a leading figure in several campaigns in Manchester including homelessness and leaseholder issues.

She also made her name nationally several years ago when her agency marketed a £15,000-a-week apartment belonging to footballer Phil Neville.
