Housing minister Eddie Hughes to headline landlords’ national gathering
Hughes, who is sole survivor of DLUHC purge, is expected to explain government's approach to PRS after white paper published.
Housing minister Eddie Hughes (main picture) is to outline the Government’s plans for PRS at this year’s national landlords’ conference.
Hughes, who is to be the keynote speaker at NRLA’s Landlord Conference 2022, will inevitably cover the Renters’ Reform White Paper.
The white paper was given a cautious welcome when it was published last month, and it will be interesting to see how Hughes’ speech is received by conference delegates.
Ben Beadle, NRLA CEO, (right) said at the time: “Whilst headline commitments to strengthening possession grounds, speedier court processes and mediation are helpful, the detail to follow must retain the confidence of responsible landlords, as well as improving tenants’ rights.
“We will be analysing the Government’s plans carefully to ensure they meet this test. A failure to do so will exacerbate the housing crisis at a time when renters are struggling to find the homes they need.
He warned ministers that government policies had led to a shortage of rental supply, when demand was extremely high. Rents were rising and landlords leaving the sector, he said.
Radical measures

The long-awaited white paper contained some radical measures including an end to blanket bans on benefit tenants, and more restrictions on landlords’ ability to evict.
Housing secretary Michael Gove, who launched the white paper, was later sacked and replaced by Greg Clark.
