Tories launch petition calling for Stamp Duty to be scrapped on main homes

Ollie Marshall of Prime Purchase supports the initiative saying removing Stamp Duty would be transformative as it is one of the UK’s most ‘toxic taxes’.

The Conservatives have launched a petition calling on the Government to scrap Stamp Duty on main residences, arguing it is holding back housing mobility and making home ownership harder to achieve.

The removal of the tax, though, would not extend to additional properties, buy-to-let homes or properties bought through companies.

It is part of an ongoing Conservative campaign against Stamp Duty. In October 2025, party leader Kemi Badenoch pledged that a future Conservative government would abolish the tax on main residences to “make it easier for millions to realise the dreams of home ownership”.

Vote to scrap Stamp Duty

The party later attempted to force a vote in the House of Commons on scrapping Stamp Duty in a bid to put pressure on the Government, although Labour’s majority meant the proposal was rejected.

Industry figures have long argued that the tax discourages people from moving and restricts housing supply.

Ollie Marshall (pictured), Director of buying agency Prime Purchase, told The Intermediary: “Finally, the Conservatives’ petition urging Labour to scrap Stamp Duty on main homes is one worth voting for.

Stamp Duty is a constant handbrake on people’s lives, not to mention the wider economy.”

“Removing stamp duty would be transformative, as it is one of the UK’s most toxic taxes. Not only is it a tax on aspiration, but it punishes young, growing families.

“Stamp Duty is a constant handbrake on people’s lives, not to mention the wider economy.”

Stamp Duty, however, remains a major source of revenue for the Treasury. HMRC figures published in December showed receipts jumped 21% from £8.57 billion in 2023-24 to £10.38 billion in 2024-25 despite a subdued housing market.
