Doug Gascoine established his eponymous and well-known Nottingham agency in 1954 and carried on helping his daughter run the business until very recently.

An estate agent who carried on working for the business he founded until only very recently when his health began to fail has died aged 92.

Widely respected Nottingham man Doug Gascoine or ‘DG’ opened the first branch of his eponymous sales and lettings agency in 1954 in the Westgate, Southwell area of the city when he was just 26 years old.

He grew the business, which recently won a regional prize at The Negotiator Awards and currently employs 13 staff, until at one point it had ten branches and was one of the biggest names in the Nottingham property industry, alongside a furniture auction centre and a cattle market.

The two ancillary businesses still remain however Gascoines now has reduced its network to two branches in Southwell and Ravenshead after competition and a tougher local property market whittled away at branch numbers.

Legacy

His daughter Emma, who is now running the businesses, says she will be “carrying on his legacy” as an estate agent.

“Upholding our traditions and beliefs whilst successfully evolving into the modern era has given us the success that we hold in todays crowded estate agency market,” she says.

The business prompted much loyalty among staff including Mr Gascoine’s secretary Rita who retired in 2017 aged 72 after working for the company for 55 years.

Doug died peacefully and suddenly at 8.45pm on Monday, March 25, 2019, with his wife Rachel at his side and surrounded by family.

His funeral will take place at Southwell Minster on Tuesday, April 9th at 3pm. The family has requested any mourners make donations to Cancer Research.
