Rogue spray foam firms STILL ‘making homes impossible to sell’

Vulnerable homeowners are still being duped by door-to-door spray foam salesmen, it is reported, even though the foam can make homes impossible to put on the market.

Homeowners are still being targeted by dodgy spray foam installers who can leave a home impossible to sell, new reports suggest.

Pensioners in particular are falling victim to door-to-door salesmen promising ‘today only’ deals for ‘cheap insulation’, the Daily Telegraph reports.

Some firms charge thousands for spray foam nstallation and fail to use it properly causing damp issues in roofs, even though a new code of practice has been issued.

Warned

Surveyors often recommend it is removed before a property is sold, and buyers are unable to secure a mortgage unless the polyurethane foam is taken out.

Nationwide warned last year that cases of homeowners with problems caused by such insulation were rocketing. It was blamed for around 250,000 homes being ineligible for mortgages.

The lender said people were more vulnerable to rogue installers as they seek to make their homes more energy efficient and save money.

Code of practice

The Insulation Manufacturers Association (IMA), which includes makers and installers, surveyors, valuers and lenders, published a code of practice on spray foam installation in May.

Independent surveyors trade body RPSA (Residential Property Surveyors Association) performed a U-turn last year on its guidance for spray foam installation.

The RPSA retracted the guidance, which said that if no detailed technical information was available then surveyors should recommend the foam is removed and the roof replaced.

  1. This is one of those subjects that when you step back into reality it makes not lot of difference, just because “I’m rarely right about anything” RICS says it “may” cause condensation doesn’t mean it will do much in your lifetime. Get some soffit vents and a hole saw! It’s the usual **** blown out of proportion like the Triffid , sorry knotweed. Have you every tired to grow one? good luck they almost always die!
