Propertymark has announced its keynote speaker for Propertymark One is to be Angela Rayner – a controversial choice, but a chance for agents to question her directly.

Angela Rayner speaking on stageControversial MP Angela Rayner is set to be ‘held to account’ by the housing industry at this summer’s Propertymark One conference.

The national event will see Rayner take to the stage in front of estate and lettings agents, where she will be face tough questions as one of the event’s main speakers.

Propertymark said it was an opportunity to hold the former Housing Secretary to account about the decisions she made as Housing Secretary.

In a statement, it said: “We know how tough it feels to work in property right now.

“Renters’ Rights. Disruption to leasehold markets following incomplete reform. New Employment Rights legislation. National Insurance increases. Rising minimum wage costs. Reduced supply and fragile consumer confidence. The pressure on margins and compliance is real.

She will answer delegates’ questions. This is not about endorsement. It is about accountability.”

“This is an opportunity to put questions directly to Angela Rayner. She will answer delegates’ questions in the room. This is not about endorsement. It is about accountability.

“As Secretary of State, she was responsible for wide-scale lettings and leasehold reform – decisions with long-term consequences for sales and rental markets. Those reforms have shaped the property sector across the country.”

It follows Rayner’s resignation as UK Deputy Prime Minister, Housing Secretary and Deputy Leader in September last year.

Breach of ministerial code

She resigned after an investigation found that she breached the ministerial code by failing to pay the correct Stamp Duty on her former Hove home.

Her failure to seek property tax advice and the resulting underpayment fell short of standards.

In her resignation letter at the time, Rayner said: “For a teenage mum from a council estate in Stockport to serve at the highest level of Government has been the honour of my life.

“Our Renters’ Rights Bill will finally ban the oppressive rule of no-fault evictions and will reset the balance between renters and landlords through groundbreaking protection for renters. Everyone deserves to live in a safe and decent home, and I know this legislation will deliver that for millions of people across the country.

“The Planning and Infrastructure Bill will also be instrumental in getting the homes so many people across this country need built.”
