ARLA Chief Executive David Cox to leave post today, Propertymark confirms

Long-standing and respected boss of Propertymark's lettings arm has, after several weeks of rumours, suddenly departed the organisation.

David Cox, the Chief Executive of ARLA Propertymark is leaving the organisation today without an interim period or handover.

“The Board of Propertymark would like to thank David for his significant contribution in his time to the development of ARLA Propertymark, and wish him well in his future endeavours,” a statement from Propertymark says.

But the trade association has given no details of why Cox has left, but is rumoured that his bid to head up the unified organisation – which was announced earlier this month – had not been possible.

It is also rumoured that Propertymark are looking for fresh blood to lead the organisation including the possibility of someone with a non-industry track record.

Cox’s departure has been triggered by the retirement of Mark Hayward, which was announced 3rd July and the restructure of the organisation that followed.

It is understood that Propertymark is to lose all its distinct subdivisions and become a unified organisation without the ‘ARLA’ and ‘NAEA’ prefixes.

Cox joined ARLA in 2014 as its MD before being made its Chief Executive, having previously been a senior policy officer at the National Landlords Association for five years.

Cox’s departure is particularly baffling as both he has such good connections with civils servants and ministers, having helped steer several recent policy changes.

  1. Absolutely appalling he wasn’t permitted to stand for the Propertymark head role. Very sad it has come to this. As others have intimated, we will have reconsider our membership if the organisation returns to its mutual backslapping, fusty old ways.
