‘Hallway flat’ letting agent reduces rent after complaints
Flat hunters said the original rent of £850 was too expensive, calling the flat 'grim' and like 'a prison'.
The landlord and agent of a studio ‘hallway’ flat in Cambridge agreed to lower the rent after complaints from potential tenants.
Originally listed with a rental price of £850, the ‘small single studio’ was later offered for £750 per month including bills.
Reddit website users described the listing as “someone’s hallway”, with others calling it “grim” and a “prison”. The flat consists of a bathroom, kitchen area, and a single bed in just under 13 square metres. (see main picture)
Letting agents EPS Properties admitted the firm received complaints about the listing.
‘Very reasonable’
Hasan Osman, partner as EPS Properties, told Cambridgeshire Live: “The price is deemed by the current market value.” He said that £750 per month is “very reasonable” for a studio property that includes a shower room, small kitchenette, and outdoor space.
I do feel the pictures don’t do the property justice.”
Hasan said: “More importantly all the bills are included in this price too. The bills include water, gas, electric, council tax, and Wi-Fi.”
“I do feel the pictures don’t do the property justice,” he added.
“People fail to realise that landlords take the risk of investing their money into property and are taxed on the full rental income,” Hasan said.
“The mortgages are not taken into consideration when they have to pay tax. Landlords in Cambridge are just hopeful that the property goes up in value with property gains and then when they sell the property they have to pay tax on this too.”
