Labour launches stinging attack on letting agents and landlords

Deputy leader Angela Rayner says her party will be 'the champion' of renters, and will ban Section 21 'no fault' evictions immediately as well as 'up front charges' such as holding deposits.

Labour Deputy Leader Angela Rayner (main picture) has launched an attack on letting agents and landlords claiming the party will be the ‘champion’ of renters.

She said tenants would be much better off under a Labour government, with a ban on Section 21 ‘no fault’ evictions and an end to ‘rental bidding wars’, The Independent reports.

The Tories have failed to stand up for renters.”

Rayner, who is also the Shadow Housing Secretary, says: “Time and time again, the Tories have failed to stand up for renters.

“From endless delays to no-fault evictions, to failure to sort damp, cold and mouldy homes, the Conservatives are failing working people.

Call time

“Labour will call time on a decade of Tory vested interest and put renters first,” she says.

“Our plans will support good landlords, but we are calling time on unscrupulous landlords strangling growth.”

Immediate ban

She promises there would be an immediate ban on Section 21 evictions under Labour, as well as action to end bidding wars, although she doesn’t say how this would be done.

There would also be new protections against damp, mould and cold in PRS homes, she says.

“The only real way to make renting more affordable is to build more homes, that’s why we have a plan to build 1.5 million homes over five years as an antidote to Britain’s failing private rented sector,” she adds.

The party says all landlords will have to meet energy efficiency standards by 2030.

  1. Just shows how Angela Rayner (I’m not a landlord) does not understand her brief.
Holding deposits were outlawed 5 years ago and enforcement is through local authorities.
Section 21 will take over a year to abolish unless she uses the old Covid-19 legislation.
Raving left-wing policies to help bad tenants who do not follow the rules anyway.
Just got a house back from a major builder’s white collar worker.
He used the protections from eviction to not pay for 2 years.
    Welcome to Labour land.

  2. Typical politician, saying what the public want to hear, in order to win votes! Vilifying GOOD Agents and Landlords and tarring us all with the same brush! The PRS is in this mess because of what the current Government have/have not done and we’re left to work with it and pick up the pieces. Why not help ‘Generation Rent’ to actually get on the property ladder, by helping them with mortgages, low interest rates, etc?!
