Labour’s Angela Rayner takes on Gove with housing brief

Angela Rayner is appointed as the new Shadow Levelling Up Secretary, taking over from Lisa Nandy.

Labour‘s Deputy Leader will be responsible for commenting on housing in her new role opposing Michael Gove.

Rayner did not have policy brief before the Shadow Cabinet reshuffle, but will now have to take on issues such as reform of the PRS and new house building.

Demotion

Nandy has been given a new job as Shadow International Development Secretary, in a move that is being seen as a demotion.

As the MP for Ashton-Under-Lyne since 2015, Rayner is seen as one of the most talented politicians in the Labour ranks.

Housing experience

She was elected Labour’s deputy leader at the same Sir Keir Starmer became leader in 2020.

Rayner comes from a trade union background, having previously worked for Unison, and was married to Mark Rayner, a Unison official before they separated. It is not clear if she has any housing experience.
