Labour MP launches broadside against bad landlords

Bournemouth MP Tom Hayes says the rental market is ‘broken’ and Renters’ Rights Bill will fix it by rooting out 'rogue landlords' despite industry claims to the contrary.

Labour MP Tom Hayes (pictured) claims landlords are profiting from unsafe living conditions and tenants are living under the shadow of “no-fault” evictions.

Writing in the Daily Echo Hayes gives a number of examples: Landlords, he says: ”Are forcing families to sleep together in the dining room because their flat is cramped.”

And adds: “I’ve met rogue landlords who force renters to face cramped, unsafe homes.

“They are the bad apples, forcing pensioners to put up with dangerous wiring that takes years to fix.

Mushrooms

“A rogue landlord forced a renter to face mould so severe that mushrooms were growing in the bathroom grout. Another rogue landlord was fine with children developing asthma from damp.”

He says he is proud to vote for the Government’s new Renters’ Rights Bill to end no-fault evictions and give renters security.

And, he claims when it becomes law, it will rescue the reputation of decent landlords who already meeting its standards.

We can make sure every rented home is safe for the people who live in it.”

He believes the Bill will target rogue landlords and make it harder for them to profit from unsafe living conditions.

In Hayes’ constituency, Bournemouth East, there is a high concentration of renters, with one in three households in the private rented sector. It’s why he says: “We have to get this right because renting is the reality for so many families, professionals and retirees”.

And he concludes: “With strong legislation and strong local action, we can make sure every rented home is safe for the people who live in it”.
