Tories lead charge with agents and landlords to amend Renters’ Rights Bill

Conservative Shadow Housing Minister Baroness Scott organised a meeting – including the NRLA and Dexters – to look at ways to slow the Bill down or block it.

Agents and landlord leaders joined a meeting organised by the Conservatives to look at how the Renters’ Rights Bill could be amended, it has emerged.

Representatives from Dexters joined the NRLA, Propertymark and new build letting group Get Living at a roundtable event led by Tory Shadow Housing Minister Baroness Scott (main picture).

There was some discussion about a possible legal challenge to the Bill on human rights grounds, The Guardian reported.

Slow down

The Bill, which will ban Section 21 ‘no fault’ evictions, is still passing through the House of Lords currently, and ways to change it were also considered.

Ben Beadle, CEO, NRLA

Ben Beadle, CEO at the NRLA told The Neg: “The NRLA has long accepted that Section 21 is going, and is not campaigning to retain it.

“Our focus remains solely on ensuring the Renters’ Rights Bill is workable in practice without undermining its core objectives,” he says.

“We have not been involved in any discussions about legal challenges related to the Renters’ Rights Bill.”

Timothy Douglas, Head of Policy and Campaigns at Propertymark, told The Neg the intention of the meeting was not to slow down or block the bill, and also distanced Propertymark from any legal action.

“The meeting was a welcome opportunity to speak to peers about practical ways to improve the legislation. We want more detail if anything.

“I don’t think the Tories are trying to scupper the Bill,” he says.
