London’s Mayor demands action be taken against rogue landlord MPs

Sadiq Khan has waded into the argument over Labour MP Jas Athwal’s rental properties saying bad landlords should face action regardless of whether they are "Labour MPs or ordinary people".

After being shown a BBC investigation into Athwal’s mouldy, ant-infested and unlicensed rental properties, London Mayor Sadiq Khan said: “A bad landlord is a bad landlord.”

If you’re a bad landlord action should be taken against you.”

“It doesn’t matter whether you’re a Labour MP or a normal person. If you’re a bad landlord action should be taken against you.

“I wasn’t aware of Jas’s various properties until I saw the BBC report. I think it’s right he sacked the managing agent.”

Apology

He did though acknowledge Mr Athwal’s apology, adding: “It’s right he’s going to personally compensate all those tenants who have lost out”.

“But it’s wrong that tenants, Londoners, are living in the awful accommodation that his tenants were living in.”

As was reported in The Neg Athal, who is now MP for Ilford South has blamed his unnamed managing agent for both the condition of his properties and for the lack of licensing.

When Khan was asked whether Athwal should be punished he replied: “Thankfully I’m not in charge of disciplining MPs.”

And Sir Keir Starmer has confirmed that Athwal will not be facing disciplinary action, saying the MP was taking action to put it right.

Jas Athwal is Labour MP for Ilford South.
