Right to Rent deadline changed AGAIN as government plans digital roll-out

Home Office says letting agents will not have to return to face-to-face immigration status checks until 5th April next year ahead of more permanent digital solution.

The Home Office has given letting agents and landlords more time to carry on doing Right to Rent checks virtually rather than face-to-face, this time until 5th April next year.

The announcement is the fourth extension given to the more relaxed immigration status checking rules having initially been due to run out on 17th May then extended until 21st June then the 31st August and now 5th April 2022.

Until the 5th 2022 letting agents and will still be able to do online video identity checks and accept digital/scanned copies of Right to Rent documentation.

This is instead of having to do face-to-face status check including the physical eye-balling of documents, which was suspended when Covid struck.

Positive feedback

“We have made the decision to defer the date following the positive feedback we received about the ability to conduct checks remotely. We initiated a review of the availability of specialist technology to support a system of digital Right to Rent checks in the future,” a Home Office statement says.

“The intention is to introduce a new digital solution to include many who are unable to use the Home Office online checking service, including UK and Irish citizens.

“This will enable checks to continue to be conducted remotely but with enhanced security.

“Deferring the end date of the adjusted checks to 5 April 2022 ensures the Right to Rent Scheme continues to operate in a manner which supports landlords and letting agents, whilst we look to implement a long-term, post-pandemic solution.”
