Savills suspends Manchester employee following N-word comments on Twitter

An estate agent working for Savills has been suspended pending an investigation following racist remarks made about members of the England football squad following their defeat last night.

The agent, who is a commercial buildings manager working in Manchester, is said to have posted an ‘appalling’ racist comment on Twitter but his family has subsequently claimed that his account was hacked.

Consequently, the agent has referred the matter on to Greater Manchester Police.

The tweet, which used the N-word, was ‘liked’ 846 times and ‘retweeted’ 745 times before it was deleted by the account holder.

“Savills abhors and has zero tolerance to any form of racism and racial discrimination and is appalled by the racist comments in these tweets,” a company spokesman says.

“Savills confirms that the staff member connected with the racist comments placed on Twitter claims that his account was taken over by a third party and that the matter is being referred to police.”

The estate agency has confirmed that the employee involved has been suspended while an ‘urgent’ investigation is undertaken.

The comments on Twitter made within the agent’s account are not unusual. The three England players who missed their penalty shoot-out shots; Bukayo Saka, Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho, have endured a barrage of racist comments online since the game ended.

The Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, opened his evening press conference with this remark, “To those who have been directing racist abuse to some of the players, I say ‘shame on you’ and I hope you will crawl back under the rock from which you emerged.”

“As a body who represents agents, we never want to see an incident like this occur and such behaviour doesn’t have a place in modern society. We trust Savills to take appropriate action.”
