Learning ‘on the job’ beats the classroom, say estate agents
A big majority of estate agents believe it is better to learn the ropes on the ground than in a classroom, an EXP survey finds.

Agents believe on-the-job training is a far better way of learning how to become a sales or lettings agent than in a classroom, a survey has discovered.
That’s the belief of most agents when asked by EXP what was the best way into the property industry. The majority, 83%, believe that estate agency is a job best learnt on the ground.
Degrees don’t make better agents
A survey of UK agents commissioned by EXP UK, found that despite there being no formal qualification required to become an estate agent, 30% hold GCSEs, a further 30% a university degree or similar, and 9% a masters degree.
But just 23% believe that there should be a mandatory level of education required to become an estate agent, and only 29% believe that those who have completed higher education make better estate agents.
When it came to their first job in estate agency, just 35% were required to complete any form of training course or similar when starting their career. .
Estate agency remains a role that is best mastered on the ground, learning on the job, not in a classroom.”

Adam Day, Head of EXP UK, says: “The lack of qualification required to be an estate agent is a hot topic that has been raised on many occasions, and it’s clear that, in the modern day property market, many agents believe there should be some form of entry requirement.
“But whilst it’s clear that agents do see the value in a sector focussed qualification, estate agency remains a role that is best mastered on the ground, learning on the job, not in a classroom.”
The survey was carried out to mark Global Education Week.
