Variety the key for Clive Emson

Clive Emson raised more than £21 million at its July auction, the fifth of eight this year. The firm, covering southern England, sold more than 75% of the 119 lots offered. Highlights included the former Fort Gilkicker (left), with Solent views from Military Road, Alverstoke, Gosport, which went under the gavel at £1.386 million after attracting huge interest. The Victorian structure, built at the behest of Prime Minister Lord Palmerston, was sold with consent for conversion to 26 homes.

Collingham Water Booster Station, near Newark in Nottinghamshire, a structure with potential for alternative use, subject to planning, went for £6,000.
