Here’s why fewer people are moving home at the moment

As agents scratch their heads about the ongoing decline in property sales in the UK, one answer to what’s going on has been revealed in research released today by the Building Societies Association (BSA). Its BSA Property Tracker reveals that 27% of respondents within the survey thought it was not a good time to buy a property, and explains why; among home movers 38% were concerned by Stamp Duty costs and among first time buyers 68% worried about saving to raise a deposit. Personal finances are also a factor in putting off home purchasers and movers; 40% of those surveyed worry about the rising cost of living and 28% about the difficulty of saving for the future. “Confidence in the housing market is clearly fragile. Consumers were faced with political uncertainty following the vote to leave the EU and unexpected General Election results, and now the rising cost of living is their latest challenge,” says Paul Broadhead, Head of Mortgage Policy at the BSA. “Consumer prices are running ahead of wage growth, and there is little evidence of this changing in the short term. This is adding to the formidable affordability constraints already facing prospective home buyers. “It is evident…

Countrywide’s next Open House set to be largest yet

Countrywide has kicked off its latest national open house event which, despite recent branch closures and operational streamlining, is set to be the biggest yet. This will be the 15th time the company has run the event since launching it in 2010, the most recent one being in March earlier this year, and before that last September. “We can’t tell for sure how many vendors and tenants will sign up to include their properties within us until the last moment, but it’s shaping up to be big this year,” a spokesperson told The Negotiator. “The good thing about this event is that it takes places across a vast range of properties – owners of million pound mansions throw their doors open for our Open House as well as homes from the rest of the market.” During the most recent Autumn event 29,000 viewings took place at 6,000 properties available to buy or let over the weekend of 25th-26th September. This means on average nearly five people attended each open house. During the inaugural Open House, during December 2009, Countrywide’s brands booked 27,000 viewings across 11,000 properties. This Autumn’s Big Open House is taking place on the weekend of 30th September-1st…

Interview: the Knight Frank executive who went ‘proptech’

A proptech start-up called OneDome that offers agents the tools to book viewings online has won over £3 million in funding from several backers including Sir Nigel Knowles, the founder of legal firm DLA Piper. The company has also persuaded one of Knight Frank’s senior people to jump ship. Rachel Dipper, who until June was Head of Residential Marketing at Knight Frank, is now heading up OneDome’s promotional effort as Vice President of Marketing and Partnerships. The company also has a former Skype employee leading its technology build and one of its co-founders is former JP Morgan executive, Babek Ismayil (both pictured front row, above). “We offer agents the ability to take on the online disrupters and offer online bookings, without having to partner with another brand,” says Rachel (pictured, left). The company, which has been going about a year and has 12 staff in London and a further 40 in Ukraine, has signed up Essex agent Yaxley Homes to its service and says it has a further 15 agents getting ready to join as well. OneDome offers a platform that enables agents to drive sales and vendor enquiries to their own website, earn referral fees for conveyancing and mortgage enquiries,…
