Striking civil servants at HM Land Registry won’t make a difference

HM Land Registry is among the 126 government departments from pensions to passports that voted for strike action last week but many believe service is so bad it will be hard to notice any difference.

The property industry has been left flummoxed at HM Land Registry civil servants’ decision to strike next month.

HM Land Registry is among the 126 government departments from pensions to passports that voted for strike action last week.

The Public and Commercial Services union (PCS) announced on Thursday that the threshold for strike action had been hit in 126 public sector workplaces, covering 100,000 workers.

HUGE

At the time the PCS general secretary, Mark Serwotka, said: “The government must look at the huge vote for strike action across swathes of the civil service and realise it can no longer treat its workers with contempt.

“Our members have spoken and if the government fails to listen to them, we’ll have no option than to launch a prolonged programme of industrial action reaching into every corner of public life.”

Strikes are meant to begin in December and could go on until the middle of next year.

Serwotka, previously suggested his members could take coordinated action, side-by-side with workers from other sectors striking in the coming months.

DERISION

While any strike action is unlikely to have much impact on the property market on LinkedIn the news was met with derision.

Marvellous, that’s going to help! What a mess this country is in!”

John Ahmed, chief executive of Movin’ Legal says: “Marvellous, that’s going to help! What a mess this country is in!”

Dawn Barker, residential conveyancing assistant at Barker & Son & Isherwood LLP, says: “Oh joy – that’s going to help the already struggling situation!”

And Fabian Braithwaite, owner of HSR Law Solicitors, adds: “Timescales on registrations suggest they are already on strike.”

Meanwhile brokers were also less than impressed.

No one will notice the difference.”

Malcolm Davidson, managing director at UK Money Man Mortgage Brokers, says: “No one will notice the difference.”

And David Baker, managing director at LIFT-Mortgages, adds: “I thought they were on strike.”

HM Land Registry was approached for comment.
