Suzy Lamplugh Trust wins Home Office action on stalking

The Suzy Lamplugh Trust has welcomed Home Office proposals to protect the victims of stalking after the charity played a key role in framing the new banning orders. From January 20th the police will be able to secure Stalking Protection Orders (SPOs) to ban pursuers from approaching or contacting their victims or visiting their home or where they work or study. “I am determined that we do everything we can to better protect victims and new SPOs will help the police to intervene and take action against perpetrators at the earliest opportunity,” says Victoria Atkins, Minister for Safeguarding and Vulnerability. Suky Bhaker (left), acting chief executive of the Suzy Lamplugh Trust – which is named after the 25-year-old estate agent who went missing in 1986 and is presumed murdered, said: “Today is an important step forward in the way stalking is handled in England and Wales and an acknowledgement of the suffering victims of stalking can face. “We welcome the introduction of Stalking Protection Orders and hope to see the new order complement the existing legislation to ensure that victims receive a proactive response when they come forward and report stalking.” The Suzy Lamplugh Trust was set up by the…

Channel 5 programme re-ignites debate over who killed Suzy Lamplugh

A documentary on Channel 5 last night has reignited the debate over who killed 25-year-old estate agent Suzy Lamplugh, who vanished in 1986 after meeting a ‘Mr Kipper’ to view a property in Fulham, SW London. Suzy was officially declared dead in 1994 although her remains have never been found. During the programme ‘My Son The Serial Killer’ (see right) aired last night at 9pm, the father of convicted serial killer Steven Wright said he was “troubled” by pictures of his son with Suzy Lamplugh. Steven worked with Suzy on the QE2 cruise ship during the 1980s but during the original police investigation into Suzy’s disappearance, he was ruled out. But a diary entry made by a family member revealed that he was on shore leave in the UK on the day that Suzy disappeared. Steven Wright, who was also known as the ‘Suffolk Strangler’, was convicted in 2007 of killing five prostitutes during a ten-day period in Ipswich the previous year. His father, Conrad, who is now 81, says in the documentary that he still has “many questions” in his mind about the link between his son and Suzy (pictured, left) and has been asking himself ‘what if’ questions…

It’s about helping people live safer, more confident lives. New research To mark the 30th anniversary of Suzy’s disappearance the trust has carried out research into personal safety issues within the housing sector and is proposing that estate agencies sign up to ‘Suzy’s Code for Personal Safety’ to ensure that their employees are as ‘Safe As Houses’ while at work. According to the English Housing Survey 2014-15, there are 22.5million households in England. Almost everyone will visit a prospective property at some point in their lifetime.
