Gary Keller, the CEO of the world’s largest estate agency Keller Williams, has stepped down from the role just 18 months after re-joining the company.

Keller co-founded the firm in 1983 but left in 1995, returning last year to guide the firm’s ‘digital transformation’. But he now says he’s ready to hand over the reins of power to a new No.1.

Keller has therefore now stepped down from the top leadership role twice, this time to be Executive Chairman of KWx, a new holding company created for the myriad Keller Williams arms including its mortgage, insurance, services and worldwide operations.

“Effective immediately, I am stepping down from my role as CEO of Keller Williams Realty,” he says.

“This move will allow me the opportunity to get back to my passion – placing my focus on the vision for our industry, consulting our amazing agents and leaders, and building the models and systems for tomorrow’s real estate environment.”

Current company president Josh Team, who was given the job by Keller, will take on all the duties and responsibilities that he previously held as CEO. Keller will be joined at KWx by leading US business figure Carl Liebert as its CEO.

No clear reason has been given for the senior leadership change at the top although age may play a role – Keller recently celebrated his 63rd birthday.

His departure as CEO comes during a crucial time for Keller Williams here, which has been working hard to crack the UK market and take advantage of changing attitudes to work/life balance and working from home among many estate agents.
