You gouda admire her: letting agent makes cheesy exit from job

Maria Billington has started up an unusual food company after losing her job two months ago at a Plymouth estate agency.

Negotiators worried about their jobs in the coming months will take some solace from a letting agent in Plymouth who, after being made redundant last last year, has now set up a highly successful food business.

Maria Billington, 30, who until at least May last year worked as a lettings negotiator at Plymouth independent one-branch estate agency Hindhead Property, was let go by the firm just before Christmas.

But she has turned the set-back into an opportunity and has instead launched a food business that, local media reports, is flying.

Billington, who worked as a letting agent at Hindhead for over four years, has established a ‘grazing box’ food company specialising in posh cheese platters called On A Platter.

The business appears to be going well despite only being launched a few days ago – her Facebook page already has 1,200 ‘likes’.

“It’s becoming really popular. I was made redundant just before Christmas so while I was applying for work I needed some ideas,” the former letting agent told local media.

“Everyone kept telling me to start something like this. I’d always brought cheeseboards to parties and get togethers, and my friends suggested I do it as a business.

“Valentines Day is coming up too so I’m going to change them up to suit special occasions coming up.

“I think people are tending to support local businesses at the moment so it’s doing really well. I’ve had so many people, so many new followers, people putting orders in, it’s brilliant.”

This is not the first time Hindhead Property has attracted unusual headlines. Two years ago the agency controversially backed environmental group Extinction Rebellion.
