‘Business as usual’ says agent caught up in Kwasi controversy

Mike Bazely, who was caught up in a controversy about a rude gesture, says his pipeline has not been hit by the financial turmoil.

An agent based in former Chancellor Kwasi Kwarteng’s constituency told The Neg, business is going well despite the economic crisis.

Mike Bazely of Bazely & Co, (pictured) an independent located in Shepperton High Street, says he has hardly felt the effects of the market turmoil and higher interest rates.

He featured in the news this week after it was alleged someone in a high street agency made a rude gesture to Kwarteng during a walkabout.

An article appeared on The Guardian’s website about the incident, saying a member of the ex-Chancellor’s team reported it.

Staff in his office have been receiving texts asking if it was they who had gestured to Kwarteng.

Bazely says it certainly wasn’t anyone in his office, and there are three other agents based in the high street, in south west London.

“It was nothing to do with us,” he says. “I have no knowledge of who it might have been.”

Two offers

He says his property pipeline appears to be almost unaffected by the events of the last few weeks. “We listed two properties last week and we have had offers on both.”

“We have had too many buyers and not enough stock,” he says.

He told The Neg that people in Shepperton are not angry with the recent political events, but they are disappointed. He was still sceptical that Conservative Kwarteng’s Spelthorne seat was under threat though.

“This is a very small town and it is a Tory area. I doubt that will change at the next election,” he says.

Kwarteng was sacked by Prime Minister Liz Truss last week after his Mini-budget and tax cutting policies caused market chaos.
