TDS supports homeless community in N. Ireland

TDS Northern Ireland have joined forces with the charity, Simon Community, to support people at risk of homelessness.

TDS Northern Ireland have joined forces with Simon CommunityThanks to funding from the Tenancy Deposit Scheme (TDS), Simon Community, Northern Ireland’s leading homelessness charity, has been able to help people who are struggling with the upfront costs of renting privately.

Right now, over 59,500 people are officially classed as homeless in Northern Ireland – that’s one in every 32 people. But this doesn’t include the thousands more who are “hidden homeless” – staying with friends, sofa surfing, or living in unsuitable conditions without proper support.

With social housing waiting lists at a record high and private rents going up by 10% in the past year alone, it’s becoming harder and harder for people to find somewhere to live.

TDS support has directly funded 15 rental deposits and helped the charity to offer support and advice to hundreds of other people who have reached out to the charity through their freephone support line.

Changing lives

Harriett Roberts, Director of Growth & Engagement at Simon Community,  said: “TDS’s support has genuinely changed lives. It’s helped prevent homelessness before it happens, and given people the chance to rebuild and secure a home of their own. We’re really thankful for their ongoing support.”

Eamonn Hunt, TDS’s Head of Northern Ireland, added: “At TDS, we believe that every individual deserves a fair chance at a secure home. That’s why we’re proud to support the Simon Community and the vital work they do.

“Even a small amount of help at the right moment- like a deposit – can change someone’s life. It’s incredibly rewarding to know our support is helping people take that first step towards a more secure future to those who need it most.”
