Leading industry training firm pivots to online only operations

Julian O'Dell says his new operation 'Marvellous' is a direct response to challenges of Covid for both agents and trainers.

Julian O’Dell, one of the industry’s best-known agent trainers, has set up an online training business after his former company, TM Training & Development, came to a ‘natural close’ following the Covid pandemic.

O’Dell says TM’s mainly face-to-face offering became obsolete following the lockdowns, and also his desire not to travel as much while he supports his wife as she deals with cancer.

Also, his business partner in TM, Peter Chapman, has now taken a senior in-house management role with upmarket London estate agency Gibbs Gillespie, further persuading him it was time to start afresh.

The upshot is Marvellous Training Solutions, which builds on O’Dell’s experience offering online training for agents.

“Peter was snapped up [by] one of our longstanding client firms, which is a great compliment to the training and consultancy work he has carried out with them for over 10 years,” says O’Dell.

“I spent the first part of lockdown focusing on maintaining the welfare of family and friends, before deciding I was too young – just – to retire.”

Online pivot

Julian O’Dell says agents sceptical that online training can rival face-to-face workshops should note that the average scores in the end of course exam are higher than the averages achieved in the former ‘in the flesh’ version.

Marvellous is to distribute its online training in part through a deal with Simon Whale’s online supplier marketplace Kerfuffle.
Other advantages of online training include attendees being able to complete workshops from home or at work, no hotel accommodation and being able to have staff trained in multiple locations simultaneously.
