LETTING AGENT: ‘It’s time to remove the taboo of ‘hidden disabilities’
Savils has joined the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower network and shares some employee experiences in its latest Proud Voices film.
To mark International Day for Persons with Disabilities, Savills has released a film for its ongoing Proud Voices campaign and announced its membership of the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower network – a global initiative supporting people with non-visible disabilities.
The latest video centres on four Savills employees who share their lived experiences and discuss how supportive workplaces can help colleagues with conditions not immediately apparent to others.
Among those featured is Alex Shoolman (main image, far left), Head of Residential Lettings in Primrose Hill, who speaks candidly about his experience of having ADHD and the importance of dismantling stigma.
“Hidden disabilities, they are a lot harder to spot than physical disabilities,” said Alex. “Its, for me, really about removing the taboo behind them to help people feel welcomed and a lot more supported.”
Although Alex has always received support from colleagues when he tells them about his ADHD, he added: “There’s a lot more education that people need to have, whether its them going out to understand it themselves or just be willing to listen to colleagues that do have some sort of hidden disability.”
Proud commitment
Savills’ new membership of the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower network means staff, clients and visitors will be able to use the Sunflower symbol to discreetly indicate that they may need more time, understanding or support.
Training will be offered to employees to help them recognise the symbol and respond appropriately.
Holly Purvis, co-chair of the Savills Disability group, added: “We believe in creating a space where people can thrive. This means embedding a culture where our people are all valued, respected and made to feel included.”
Launched in 2024, the Proud Voices campaign highlights the personal stories, professional journeys and diverse experiences across Savills’ workforce, with the aim of building a more inclusive industry and encouraging authenticity within the workplace.
