Activists protest outside letting agency after legal eviction
Acorn has held a protest outside Brighton firm's branch whose representative tells The Neg it has done nothing wrong.
Renters’ rights group Acorn has taken up the case of a pensioner who refused to leave after she was evicted from her home by a letting agency when her AST came to an end.
Trina, 80, signed a 12-month AST contract in December 2023 for her home in Carn Court in North Drive, Brighton with local lettings agency Hanover Homes.
When the tenancy came to an end the landlord wanted to take back possession of the property, she refused to leave and was issued with a Section 21 notice.
She told Brighton’s Argus newspaper: “If the bailiffs come, I will bolt and lock myself in. I’m prepared to put up a fight.”
The landlord, though, gave her more time to find a new home, so she could stay over Christmas.
Banners and leaflets
Despite the concession, Acorn took up her case, organising a protest outside Hanover Homes’ office armed with banners and leaflets.
A spokesperson for Hanover Homes tells The Neg: “We have issued the tenant notice in line with current legal legislation on behalf of our landlord.”
“While Acorn have decided to protest about this, we have no control over our landlord’s decision for possession and are merely carrying out the service we are paid to do.
“We work hard to ensure we are fully compliant, and our properties are well maintained so it is disheartening to be targeted for carrying out our landlord’s wishes.”
They think they can get away with it, hiding behind anonymous desks.”
Acorn branch organiser Toby Sedgwick told the Argus: “This is something that happens all over the place.
“They think they can get away with it, hiding behind anonymous desks. We’re people, we’re human beings. We have a right to a home.”

Bless, how misguided can you get? If there was any justice in the world there would be a protest outside the landlords rented property, protesting about the tenant’s failure to adhere to perfectly legal Section 21.
These well meaning ‘activists’, would not care one tiny bit if the landlord was homeless due to the tenant failing to leave.
Acorn have absolutely no concept that landlords are not a public service. I can’t stand Trump, however you cannot deny he is bringing some common sense back into the world. Common sense is becoming an ever more rare commodity.
