Completions hit record highs as Stamp Duty deadline passes

Big conveyancer says the sector has worked ‘exceptionally hard’ to beat the Stamp Duty deadline, carrying out a month of completions in just 5 days.

The entire conveyancing sector has come together in an unprecedented effort to ensure the maximum possible number of transactions were completed ahead of the Stamp Duty deadline, according to Simplify boss David Grossman (pictured).

Estimates from the independent conveyancing and property services group suggest that during the last five days of March 2025, completion volumes across the market exceeded those for the whole of March 2024.

Months of hard work

This remarkable achievement, says Simplify, is the culmination of months of hard work by teams in conveyancing businesses across the UK. Many conveyancers, it adds, have delayed holidays and worked into evenings and weekends to ensure that people could move home in time.

Enabled by ongoing investment in technology and training, Simplify says it managed to complete over 6,500 mover transactions in the final five days.

The dedication and collaboration across the industry have been truly inspiring.”

But it wasn’t just conveyancers working together to make it happen. Simplify also credits estate agents for working in partnership with conveyancers, allowing them the space to focus on getting cases through.

Lenders have played their part, too, the company adds, by working ‘exceptionally hard’ to issue mortgage offers and release funds. And the Bank of England and other commercial payment providers also worked with conveyancers to understand the likely volumes through the peak days and extend their operational hours for payment processing to accommodate the surge in transactions.

Grossman commented, “This has been a monumental effort by everyone involved. The dedication and collaboration across the industry have been truly inspiring. We are grateful for the support from the Bank of England and other payment providers, which has been crucial in achieving these record numbers.”
