Sunak appoints expected replacement for housing minister – sixth in a year!

Rachel Maclean has been appointed as a DLUHC minister to take over from Lucy Frazer, who was promoted to the Cabinet.

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has made Rachel Maclean (main picture) a junior minister in place of Lucy Frazer, who covered housing strategy.

Frazer was responsible for policy on home ownership, buying and selling, with colleague Felicity Buchan, who has not moved in the PM’s reshuffle, in charge of PRS and the Renters Reform Bill.

She was the 14th housing minister in the space of 12 years, and her replacement will be the fifth in eight months. Frazer is the new Culture Secretary replacing Michelle Donelan.

It is unclear yet whether Maclean, who is the MP for Redditch in the West Midlands, will take over the housing brief.

There is no obvious interest in housing recorded in her parliamentary career since she was elected in 2017, but the same could also be said of Frazer.

Maclean is described as a technology entrepreneur after founding a publishing company with her husband, and later her own software firm.

She was previously a junior minister at the Ministry of Justice briefly between September and October last year. She was also a junior minister at the Home Office between September 2021 and July last year, and at the Department for Transport prior to that.
