Rightmove has made an unusual move from property marketing into estate agent training.

The portal says sales and lettings agents can now sign up to register their interest in its new qualification, a Level 3 Certificate for Estate and Letting Agents (CELA).

The course will be free, as long as an agent’s firm lists properties on Rightmove via its membership, although the exam will cost £215+VAT through third-party supplier ABBE.

The new qualification, which will be regulated by Ofqual, will launch by the end of the year and will be a direct competitor with Propertymark, whose former lettings boss David Cox now works for Rightmove.

The online-only course has been specifically designed ahead of potential regulations that the government may bring in based on the RoPA Report.

Link to The Property OmbudsmanIt is also backed by a clutch of leading industry figures including TPO boss Rebecca Marsh (pictured), trainer Richard Rawlings and leading property lawyer David Smith.

The qualification is designed for both estate and lettings agents, with the syllabus covering topics including legislation and codes of practice, generating opportunities, delivering exceptional service and property marketing.

Free training

The free training towards the qualification will be delivered online and on-demand so agents can study at their own pace. The content will be produced to suit all learning styles, including video, an accessible digital handbook and a simple user interface.

Agents can now register their details on the new qualification landing page on the Rightmove Hub.

The initiative is part of Rightmove’s ongoing attempt to broaden its appeal beyond property listings – last year it launched a dedicated Landlord and Tenant Services division following its acquisition of referencing firm Van Mildert om 2019.

  1. Its a bold move for Rightmove as the level of support needed to help agents pass their qualification is really high.
Able Agent offer online training and a choice of qualifications but we have learnt that there is a huge amount of support needed to staff as we are education/ online training/ estate agency experts. It will be interesting to see what support is offered other than free videos.

  2. I’m proud to be part of this major training initiative. It has been a huge amount of painstaking work to get to this point and I have been impressed by the dedication of all involved. I think agents taking this course will especially enjoy the fact that the training goes beyond any minimum expected ROPA requirements and delivers comprehensive skills, ideas and techniques that will directly enhance the bottom line.
