Phone bidding goes off the scale!

Bidders turned out in force for Auction House London’s recent sale with one Lot attracting a record 18 potential buyers, all on the phone at the same time. The 3 bed terrace in Preston, Lancashire needed some modernisation, so it launched with a guide of £30,000… and sold for £75,000. Auctioneer Andrew Binstock said, “At one point 18 people were bidding on the phone and as we had only 13 handsets we had to borrow phones from sponsors and advertisers – it was a fabulous scene and a great atmosphere.” Some properties up for auction were flying off the books with fierce competition from buyers. Location clearly plays a big part and this three bedroom detached house with a loft space in Beckenham, started with a guide of £750,000 and sold for £860,000; £110,000 over its guide price. Andrew Binstock added, “It was a busy room but bidding was laboured at times and there seemed to be an air of caution, no doubt due to all of the political chaos simmering in the background.”

Rogue letting agent jailed after National Trading Standards investigation

A rogue letting agent and landlord in Lancashire has been jailed for three years and nine months after he was convicted at Bolton Crown Court of nine counts of fraud, theft and forgery following a lengthy investigation by the National Trading Standards. Tahir ‘Tony’ Khaliq (pictured, left) operated a string of property companies including several letting agencies which he used as vehicles for his fraudulent activity. The most shocking was the theft of holding deposits of between £200 and £400 from over 100 prospective tenants, many of whom were extremely vulnerable people mainly in the Rochdale, Bury and Oldham areas. Khaliq, with the help of accomplice Paul Dickinson – who received a two-year suspended sentence and 240 hours of community service – took the holding deposits and claimed they were processing fees for unsuccessful tenancy applications. The court heard how one woman, after losing her holding deposit, was forced to move into a Mother and Baby unit, as well as another who experienced extreme financial difficulties while trying to save money to leave her violent and abusive partner. National Trading Standards says Khaliq was involved in other illegal activities relating to his property businesses including forging documents, the theft of…

Fracking sites will put off 64% of buyers, research claims

The government’s recent decision to give fracking the green light in Lancashire has been attacked by various groups including local communities, farmers and environmentalists. But now perhaps agents should be worried about shale gas extraction as well. Research out this afternoon reveals that over two thirds of British home buyers would be reluctant to buy a property near a fracking site. This may be bad news for agents trying to sell homes near the fracking sites in Lancashire as well as others around the UK including in Sussex. The first sanctioned site operated by fracking firm Cuadrilla is to be near Preston New Road close to Blackpool. A second site in nearby Treales, seven miles from Preston, has yet to be approved. The research by house-extension.co.uk found that 21% of the 1,000 respondents to its survey were “unlikely” to buy a home near a fracking site while 43% said they were “very unlikely” although 32% of those who took part said they’d support fracking if it meant lower energy bills in the UK. One enthusiastic supporter of fracking is Sajid Javid, Minister for Communities and Local Government, who said the green light was given to fracking for its “potential to power economic growth,…
