Prime Minister Liz Truss could be considering a move to help landlords with their tax bills, it has emerged.

She hinted to Ben Beadle, CEO of the National Residential Landlords Association, that the Government might repeal the reviled ‘Section 24’ rules that mean landlords cannot deduct mortgage interest from their tax.

It was introduced in 2015 by then-Chancellor George Osborne as a curb on the tax benefits for landlords.

But now it appears this may be about to change. Beadle says during a video interview that he asked Truss about the tax rules for landlords at a Conservative Party leadership hustings in Ruislip, west London, and she hinted at changes.

Hard time

Truss said landlords had been given “a hard time” for the last four or five years under previous governments.

She told Beadle she didn’t want to dissuade someone bringing their property into the rental market. “She wanted an environment that was encouraging towards property owners,” Beadle said on a joint podcast called ‘Landlord Lens’ with Property Tribes forum co-founder Vanessa Warwick.

“To me, there is a prime opportunity here for the removal of Section 24, and all the benefits that brings to tenants in terms of reducing costs to landlords and therefore rents,” he said.

Beadle told the podcast he didn’t believe there would be an announced repeal of Section 24 in this week’s mini-Budget, but it might be in the following Budget expected soon.
