While most 13-year-old boys are obsessed with gaming or football, a precocious young man Northern Ireland has wowed a local estate agent so much with his property knowledge, passion and house valuation skills that he’s been invited to do viewings with its owner.
Shane Melly says he’s wanted to be an estate agent in his home town of Derry for some time despite being too young to be employed, but has persuaded local agency Locate to allow him to shadow its director Anaeleigh McCormick (pictured, above) once a week in the afternoon.
The unusual story has attracted local media coverage after Melly contacted a trusted community intermediary on Facebook, asking to be put in touch with an estate agent in the city.
“When the post went up I was inundated with people sending me the post and tagging me in it,” says McCormick (above)

In the post Melly said he had all the camera equipment to be an estate agent and had offered to improve the pictures of some properties he’d seen in Derry for sale, but predictably had been turned down.
“So I went to meet Shane and his mother and checked with my solicitor that it was OK, and got the go ahead,” McCormick told local media.
“Last week he came out with me for an afternoon, and he is buzzing. He has been watching my Instagram for some time, and he’s obsessed with it. He’s just so clued in.”
McCormick then took him on a viewing and asked him to value a property, which he did accurately.
“He loved the experience, he didn’t stop grinning all afternoon. He said it was the best day of his life.”
