Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen: It’s agents’ fault interiors look awful

Changing Rooms star says estate agents are at fault for encouraging sellers to pimp up their homes so that they can sell them.

Changing Rooms star Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen certainly knows a thing or two about interior design but now he’s saying estate agents are to blame for wannabe sellers making do with inoffensive décor.

Speaking to Ideal Home to plug his new book, More More More: Making Maximalism Work in Your Home and Life, Llewelyn-Bowen (pictured left) says the estate agent-led interior trend is just ‘awful’.

And the Changing Rooms host says sellers’ plans to sell their home are no excuse for this interiors faux pas.

True enough, there’s no right or wrong way to decorate your home but there’s one interior design ‘faux pas’ Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen can’t stand: decorating your home with a view to selling, without actually selling it.

OFFENDED

Asked if there was anything that offends him when it comes to interiors, Llewelyn-Bowen replies: “It is that moment when you walk into a room and you just say, ‘This is not you, is it?

“It is that moment when you go into a room and they say, ‘Well, we’ve done it like this because we want to sell it.’ But when are you going to sell it, tomorrow?

“So you’re going to be spending two years in a room that looks this awful just because you feel it’s going to make it worth more?”

PERSONALITY

Llewelyn-Bowen says no one planning to sell is going to go to town expressing their personality and individual taste through their décor – because that won’t appeal to everyone and would be expensive.

Llewelyn-Bowen believes homeowners should only decorate their house in a way that will sell if their home is on the market – and making do with inoffensive décor in the meantime is not the way to go.
