Estate agency ‘named and shamed’ over minimum wage failings
An estate agency firm has been officially named and shamed for paying staff less than the minimum wage. A new HMRC list includes north London firm Glenmore Property Services Limited as one of 191 who broke national minimum wage law between 2011 and 2018. The Brent agent failed to pay £2,794.97 to three workers. All named employers have been made to pay back what they owed, and were fined an additional £3.2 million collectively, after investigations found a total of £2.1 million was owed to more than 34,000 workers. HMRC acknowledges that while not all minimum wage underpayments are intentional, employers have a responsibility to stick to the law, pointing to clear guidance at gov.uk. Breaches can happen when workers are being paid on or just above the minimum, and then have deductions from their pay for uniform or accommodation. The government recently gave millions of people a pay rise, by increasing National Living Wage and National Minimum Wage rates in April, meaning that someone working full time on the National Living Wage will be taking home £5,400 more each year than they were in 2010.
