One of the UK’s largest residential and commercial property management companies has been named and shamed by HMRC over its failure to pay the minimum wage to several of its administration staff.

French-owned firm BNP Parisbas Real Estate Advisory & Property Management UK Ltd, which owns UK firm Strutt & Parker, failed to pay £933.12 to three workers who are described as some of its lowest paid workers.

The huge company, which turns over some £150 million a year and makes £48 million gross profit, has been censured by HMRC for failing to pay the minimum wage to staff. The company has 1,114 employees in the UK.

BNP Parisbas Real Estate Advisory & Property Management UK is one of 200 firms named by HMRC for non-payment of the minimum wage including WH Smith, Lloyds Pharmacy, Marks & Spencer and Argos.

Collectively they left 63,000 staff out of pocket to the tune of £7 million.”

The businesses named in the list have since paid back what they owe to their staff but also faced financial penalties. The investigations by His Majesty’s Revenue and Customs concluded between 2017 and 2019.

Minister for Enterprise, Markets and Small Business Kevin Hollinrake (pictured), who founded estate agency Hunters, says: “Paying the legal minimum wage is non-negotiable and all businesses, whatever their size, should know better than to short-change hard-working staff.

“Most businesses do the right thing and look after their employees, but we’re sending a clear message to the minority who ignore the law: pay your staff properly or you’ll face the consequences.”
