Badenoch backs gas boilers during ‘anti-Net Zero’ speech
Kemi Badenoch is not the first Tory leader to U-turn on greener homes, but has made a strong attack on 'Net Zero' and said replacing gas boilers with heat pumps is not realistic.
Letting agents who have been helping their landlords prepare for the looming ban on gas boilers within rented properties may have a new answer for their clients, according to the Conservative party – namely ‘don’t bother’.
Its leader Kemi Badenoch yesterday said if she gets into power then she would scrap the 2050 ‘net zero’ plans much touted by ministers from both her party’s previous time in Government, and Labour today.
The government has set a legally binding target to reduce the UK’s net emissions by 100% by 2050 compared with 1990 levels better known as the ‘net zero target’, although official policy at the moment is to implement a rolling replacement of gas fired boilers with low or zero carbon alternatives.
Badenoch has now said she wants to sweep this commitment away, saying home owners and landlords face greater costs including “families being forced to replace perfectly functioning cars, boilers, and cookers with more expensive, less reliable versions of the same thing”, she said.
“By 2040, the Committee on Climate Change says more than half of UK homes need to rip out their boilers and replace them with a heat pump.
“There is no way we can do this quickly enough on that timescale.
“There is no way we can do this quickly enough on that timescale. 17 million houses need to be fitted with an expensive heat pump in just 15 years.
“How many houses have one now? Fewer than 300,000 – because heat pumps run on a lot of expensive electricity and it turns out, many people just don’t like them.”

4 degrees here we come.
Maybe if we all just stop believing policiticans will ever work in our children’s best interests things might actually change before the England is the Med, Greenland is Scotland and London is underwater. That would mean we’d all have to buy less crap made in China, fly less each year, buy fewer clothes, buy local food, stop wasting food etc so knowing the power of marketing probably not.
Still, I guess at least the whole boiler/heatpump debate will be over.
Is it just me or is life just total confusion? Heat pumps no heat pumps, EPCs that dont work, buy diesel cars dont buy diesel cars buy electric cars cannot afford electric cars bring in reforms to help tenants by doing away with the one thing they want ie fixed term tenancies take away benefits to get people back to work in jobs that are not there because of rises in NI and the jobs have gone abroad.
There is one common denominator in all of this and they all eat well in a big building on the bank of the Thames subsidised by us.
If it aint broke guys stop fixing it tio justify your existance and that could go for many people in the UK
