Rightmove warns agent over ongoing sophisticated phishing attack
Portal says agents have been reporting credible-looking emails being sent to them urging recipients to click through to a fake Rightmove website.
Rightmove has written to its customers to warn that a sophisticated phishing scam campaign is underway directed at estate agents and pretending to be from the portal.
Fraudsters have been emailing agents in recent weeks asking them to validate their accounts and click through to a website that is a fake version of Rightmove’s agent suite.
The portal is asking agents who experience this phishing activity to send the original fraudulent email as an attachment to [email protected].
For Outlook users this means opening an email, selecting ‘attach item’ and then at the bottom of the dropdown, ‘Outlook item’ and then browsing through messages to find the phishing email.
“Sharing this information with us helps us investigate and block potentially fraudulent activity as quickly as possible,” the portal says.
Criminals use these kinds of tricks to either get access to sensitive business details or to load Malware onto an agent’s computer and gain access to passwords, financial information and other data useful when attempting fraud.
Wary of links
Rightmove has warned agents to be wary of links within emails, and not to use the same password for every site.
Zoopla also recently had to warn of a similar campaign – in June agents received fake emails asking them to pay invoices, duping them into revealing their Zoopla Pro Account login details.
Phishing is big business and accounts for 90% of all company data breaches and in the US is said to be worth $15 billion. Every year 1.5 million phishing websites are created and 30% of all phishing emails are opened by recipients.
