Estate agency-based mortgage advisers urged to go it alone

Advisers suffering from January blues should take that leap of faith and branch out on their own, says former Countrywide senior.

Estate agency-based mortgage advisers suffering from those January blues and stuck between a corporate rock and a hard place should take that leap of faith and branch out on their own.

That’s the upbeat message from Swansea-based Mortgage Wales Director Adam Tovey (main picture, right) who’s celebrating nearly 17 months running his own brokerage with business partner Sean Mayberry.

FURLOUGH

The duo, along with many others working for Countrywide’ 25-branch agency John Francis in Wales, were furloughed during the pandemic but took the time away from the business to work on a new strategy.

The Neg reported in September 2021 how Tovey, one of the agency’s top mortgage brokers, set up on his own with three colleagues, Sean Mayberry, Paula Clement and Megan Addy.

Now nearly 17 months later the brokerage is booming.

RECRUITING

As well as taking on Relationship Manager Louise Davies in June last year Tovey says Mortgage Wales, which primarily covers the South West and the area surrounding the M4 corridor, is now recruiting more mortgage and protection advisers from across the country.

He told The Neg: “We’re an appointed representative of The Right Mortgage Network. What I would strongly say to any mortgage brokers that have been working in an estate agency environment for more than three to five years if you have any wherewithal then go and do it for yourself.

“You’ve no doubt created your own personal brand and are probably already getting returning customers.”

  1. My advice to any talented property professional working for a Corporate whether in Finance or Sales is explore working for yourself sooner rather than later. If you’re prepared to work your butt off particularly to begin with the rewards can be as great as you want them to be. Why slave away to pay for the multi layers of management and shareholders above you earning more with better cars & other perks than you? All those earnings that you generate for them could be all yours once you make that move. It may not be easy but sure as hell will be worth it!
