John Cannan has died in prison of a ruptured aneurysm still denying he had anything to do with Suzy Lamplugh’s murder.

John Cannan, who many consider the prime suspect in the murder of Suzy Lamplugh, has died in prison aged 70 without admitting his guilt or providing any clues about what happened on that fateful day in July 1985.

He was never convicted of her murder, despite multiple investigations by the police and, some 40 years later, the location of Lamplugh’s body remains a mystery.

No closure

Now Cannan has died, Suzy’s brother Richard (pictured) says it will be even harder for him and his sisters Lizzie and Tamsin to get any form of closure.

He has not given up all hope, however, believing Cannan may have left a clue in the books he wrote while serving a life sentence in HMP Full Sutton for the rape and murder of another woman, Shirley Banks.

There’s a lingering hope that maybe he left a hidden message or a note.”

He said: “I gather that he was writing books in prison, so maybe someone could read them and have a look.”

He couldn’t face reading them himself, though, adding: “But it won’t be me… There’s a lingering hope that maybe he left a hidden message or a note that would give a clue about what happened to Suze.”

Richard has now reluctantly come to terms with the idea he won’t get to scatter Suzy’s ashes and says he takes comfort from all the wonderful work done by – the Suzy Lamplugh Trust, including campaigning for new stalking laws and bringing much-needed attention to issues around personal safety.
