Upmarket Countrywide brand John D Wood has become the second large estate agency in the UK to announce that its entire fleet of cars is to go electric.

Staff at its 27 branches across London and the South East, who between them drive 50 cars, will no longer be offered petrol or diesel company cars to use when visiting clients or properties and travelling to viewings.

John D Wood says the initiative has been welcomed by 87% of staff all of whom have signed up to the electric vehicle scheme.

But as well as altruism and ‘going green’, money plays a role in the company’s decision too – more polluting fossil fuel vehicles must pay a daily charge to use London’s roads while electric cars can often park for free.

Also, the scheme is also a way to attract the best staff – as many younger applicants often have much greener scruples than their older colleagues.

The electric cars have now been ordered and, as they arrive, will replace their more pollution-belching counterparts.

“Our teams fully support the shift to electric and are proud that we are making these changes.

“Perhaps, the biggest surprise is that our most traditional agents have embraced the change with such positivity. We encourage more businesses to do the same.”

The move may have also been prompted by one of its key rivals, Chestertons, converting to an electric fleet two years ago.
