There is an argument that the UK has too many property programmes, if the daytime TV schedules are anything go by.

But Channel 4, which arguably invented the genre with Location, Location, Location and Property Ladder, disagrees.

It has launched The Great House Giveaway, to be presented by Simon O’Brien, perhaps best known during the 1980s as a Brookside actor but now a stalwart of shows like Flog It. He is also a property developer in his own right.

The show will offer a few lucky couples the opportunity to buy a property at auction using real loans provided by specialist finance firm Together, which is offering a facility of up to £3.25 million for the show competitors and will be a sponsor of the series.

property“As one of the leading players in auction finance, and our long-standing record in supporting the market, it was the obvious fit for our brand,” says its MD Chris Baguley (left).

During each episode teams of two people who have never met and not owned properties before will be set a budget and given six months to turn their projects, keeping any money they make during the process.

“The Great House Giveaway will be the only national TV property format in which you don’t have to own a house or have the money to buy a house in order to get on the programme. It’s a chance to get on the housing ladder,” says Sioned Wyn of production company Chwarel.

“Renovation is not for the faint hearted. And doing it with a complete stranger makes it even harder.”

The Great House Giveaway will begin on Channel 4 Daytime later this year.
