Chairman of key Commons housing committee ousted in surprise move
The Housing, Communities and Local Government committee, which is tasked with probing the Government over its policies, will now be led by left-leaning MP.
Florence Eshalomi MP (pictured) has been elected to replace the long-standing chairman of the parliamentary select housing committee, Clive Betts.
It has surprised commentators as Betts’ strong track record meant he was expected to retain his position, something he too hoped would happen.

Betts has been a thorn in many Ministers’ sides for some time but is probably best known for his unwavering support of the Renter’s Reform Bill and the abolition of Section 21 ‘no fault’ evictions.
The incoming Chair, Florence Eshalomi has been the MP for the Labour safe seat of Vauxhall and Camberwell Green since 2019. According to politics.co.uk she is regarded as being on the left of the Labour Party and is a member of Momentum.
She said of her new role: “I am delighted to be elected Chair of the Housing, Communities and Local Government Committee.
Housing crisis
“Fixing the housing crisis and ensuring more homes are built are crucial missions for the country and I am sure my Committee will wish to consider our approach to scrutinising the Government’s progress in these areas.
“Building safety, the rights of social housing tenants and private renters, local government finances, adult social care and strengthening our communities are also big issues for this Parliament.
“I hope the Committee will make an impact in holding the Government to account and helping to improve the lives of our constituents and I look forward to working with colleagues, on a cross-party basis, once the Committee is established.”
