Savills ‘detached house’ listing kicks off viral Twitter comments
Venerable estate agency's Rightmove listing has been widely shared online but in a way its lister probably hadn't expected.

Savills has prompted hilarity on social media after the estate agency posted a property for sale on Rightmove tagging a vast castle for sale as a ‘detached house’.
The property in question is The Street in Hythe, Kent for sale at an asking price of £11 million.
“Situated on the edge of the escarpment, this Grade I listed castle enjoys stunning views across the Romney Marsh towards the English Channel,” the listing says.
It comes with a vast main house with a Great Hall, a staff flat, five holiday cottages and 130 acres of woodland, grazing and gardens which is already a thriving corporate events and wedding venue.
Although listed on the Savills website as a ‘chateau/castle’ that would challenge even the most deep-pocketed millionaire for its running costs alone, Savills has been forced by Rightmove’s drop-down menu to advertise on the portal as a detached house.
The listing was posted on Twitter and a lively discussion ensued including one agent who said they’d hosted their wedding there and that it had ‘creepy dungeons’.
But many of the online comments centred around Savills’ gargantuan under-statement within the Rightmove listing.
The detached house tag appears to have done the trick – unusually for a Twitter post about a sales listing, it’s been viewed over 1,000 times and shared 113 times.
Simon Cook, a data analyst at The Spectator magazine, said: “Splendid British understatement her by Savills”.
Another Twitter user said: “An Englishman’s castle is his home. My aunts used to live in the cottage next door, back in the 80s.”
