Dexters boss say RoPA will stop agents ‘pretending they’re qualified’

Dexters’ CEO Andy Shepherd has said the looming RoPA minimum qualifications will finally help clear up consumer confusion over what a ‘good’ estate agent really is.

Shepherd says that although there are some good estate agent professionals out there, it is sometimes difficult to tell because there are a lot of different standards and organisations which claim to represent the industry.

“Agents have become good at pretending that they are qualified and regulated when the majority are not, so much so that the public often assume that one agent is much like the next,” he says.

Shepherd has made the remarks as his company reveals that it has recruited 170 staff this year, 70 of whom have been trained via its RoPA-compliant Academy, with a further 100 due to attend next year.

£27,000 starter salary

The 70-branch agency has also revealed that it pays recruits a starting salary of £27,000 after training, which can rise to £45,000 for the best-performing employees.

And experienced office manager can expect to earn in excess of £100,000, says recruitment boss Brandon van der Westhuizen.

He reveals that 90% of the company’s management-grade staff have been trained through its academy.

“We pride ourselves on exceptional customer service and so those with experience in retail, travel and hospitality do well on our fast-track management programme where we can train them for a career in property,” says van der Westhuizen.

“We also welcome applications from graduates and have a number of apprenticeships on offer.”
