Prime suspect in Suzy Lamplugh murder appeals for release
John Cannan has served his sentence for the murder of another woman, and now goes before a Parole Board panel.
The man suspected of killing estate agent Suzy Lamplugh is to appeal for his release.
John Cannan, who is now 68, will appear at a Parole Board hearing on Monday.
He has served 35 years for the murder of a woman from Bristol in 1987, as well as the attempted abduction of another woman and the rape of a third woman.
If successful in his release appeal, Cannan will be transferred from Full Sutton Prison in East Yorkshire to an open prison for 18 months before then being released.
Suzy disappeared in 1986 after leaving the office to attend a property viewing in Fulham, west London, with a ‘Mr Kipper’, and no one has been convicted of her murder.
In 2002 police named Cannan as the man who killed Suzy, but the Crown Prosecution Service ruled there was insufficient evidence to prosecute him.
Jim Dickie, who led the re-investigation into Suzy’s murder, says: “Cannan should never be freed. He is a serial predatory sexual offender and killer, and continues to be a danger to every female.”
Urged to confess
There were reports in June that Cannan was receiving end-of-life care, and Suzy’s family had urged him to confess to her murder before he died.
It was also reported in October that evidence linking Cannan to the murder of Suzy Lamplugh would be looked at again.
He has been interviewed about Suzy at least four times, but has always denied involvement to the police.
