The latest episode of Channel 4 property TV show Location, Location, Location has stirred up a significant storm on social media after the budgets of the two house hunting couples prompted accusations that the programme is ‘out of touch’.

Fronted by Phil Spencer and Kirstie Allsopp, the show normally attracts little attention on social media but this week’s episode has prompted howls of protest and – it is obvious from the comments – an element of jealousy that two young couples could have such huge buying budgets.

Featuring homes for sale in and around Swindon and Newbury, the show featured expectant parents Alistair and Candice with a budget of £500,000 in Wiltshire for a three-bedroom house and also younger couple James and Hayley who had £750,000 to splash out on a three/four bedroom home.

The programme features the familiar story of couples on the hunt for their first home in the villages and suburban countryside around Swindon and Newbury, but their high budgets and pickiness over the properties they are shown irked many viewers.

Twitter user Georgina tweeted: “More rich people who appear to have completely lost touch with the real world.”

Londoner Chris said: “£750k budget and they can‘t find a house they like,” while Ian from Sussex commented that: ‘No I‘m sorry Phil and Kirsty, both couples too obnoxious…changing channels.”

The comments confirm one thing – there is a growing divide between those who can afford to get onto the property ladder despite the high prices demand for the most desirable properties, and the millions of tenants on the other side of the economic divide.

Watch the episode on Channel 4 catch-up.
